Justice League Christmas Ornaments

Super excited for this year's Christmas theme. Since Justice League just came out so I thought it would be fun to have a Justice League themed Christmas. With ornaments costing almost $10 a piece at Target for superhero themed ornaments, I opted to make my own this year! The black and silver are craft wood ornaments that I handpainted and the glass ornaments were clear glass ornaments that we put glitter inside and then I handpainted the exterior with the logos with Martha Steward multi purpose paints.

Throwback Thursday: Here is a look at one of my sketches from earlier this year. Two of my favorite comic book characters.

For the past few years I have always had class the day Comic Con tickets go on sale so....once again I was not able to go this year. However, here are a few pictures from my trip to Wondercon back in March. Super fun with the family! We went as a Little Mermaid Trio + dad.

Superhero Office Wall Art

 It is important to remember that not only is it important to decorate your home space, but also your office space. This was a super easy project and it looks really nice!

Supplies:

• 3 trays (found at Target)
• 3 images printed of the internet
• 3 quotes
• Modge Podge

I found these water color images on Pinterest, while browsing. I copy and pasted the images into a Word Document and then added the quotes.

I cut them to size the trays and them simply used Modge Podge to put it together.

Super easy and I get a lot of compliments at my desk!

 

DIY String Art

So one of the projects that I worked on while I was in school was creating superhero logos out of string.

First off, this is not a project for the faint of heart. Pinterest makes this look wayyyyy easier than it is.

Second, blisters are inevitable

Third, it is time consuming and requires patience

So if your up for a challenge and looking for a project, it is fairly simple to create string art,

Supplies:
*Wood pieces: I have 16x16. I bought a board at Lowes and they cut it into pieces for me
*drill with tiny bit the size of a nail hole (trust me, this will make the process go 10x faster)
*short/tiny nails with large flat head
*hammer
*string (I got embroidery thread at Hobby Lobby. The big rolls are worth the investment)

So I printed out logos on the internet, taped them onto the wood piece and proceeded to mark with a sharpie where I wanted to put the nails.

First, I tried nailing the nail straight into the wood. Let me tell you, after about 30 minute I had 5 very crooked nails. Pathetic. I was ready to give up. However, one of my wonderful handyman friend suggested the drill bit, so I proceeded to drill holes first, then nail the nails in. LIFESAVER!!!! 

So once I got all the nails in the wholes, I began the stringing process.
This takes nimble fingers and after about an hour it hurts! I definitely recommend doing this over the course of a few days. Maybe you can watch your favorite superhero movie for motivation while your do it. Patience is important here. Don't get frustrated when the past 5 nails unravel because your lost your grip on the string. IT GETS EASIER WITH PRACTICE. 

I was pretty happy with the results. If I ever do this again the only thing I would change is that I would stain or paint the wood before I did the artwork on top. That was an afterthought for me and I think it would pop better with a dark brown stain or solid color as a background.

Batman Jewelry!

So....when I went to Hobby Lobby to get supplies for my Batman graduation cap I stumbled upon DC comic based jewelry supplies in the beads and jewelry section. Since it was 50% off AND I was going with the Batman theme anyways I decided to grab some things and make my own jewelry. I made a necklace, bracelet and earrings! Here is a picture of the outcome. Petty cool project! 

Graduation!

It's been awhile since my last post. I've been working on my Masters for the past 3 years so my hobbies have been kinda put on hold. I graduated this June and decorated my cap batman style with one of my favorite quotes from Batman Begins: "It's not who you are underneath, but what you do that defines you." I put alot of though into this cap and so I've framed this cap to hang in my office for when I become a counselor :)

If your curious how I made this glamorous hat I picked up my supplies from Hobby Lobby. Here is a list:

*gold glitter 12x12 scrapbook paper cardstock
*black glitter 12x12 scrapbook paper cardstock
*black glitter Washi tape (2inch)
*e6000 glue
*black ribbon

I used my nifty silhouette cameo to cut out the bat symbol and letters :)

I recommend gluing everything as the glitter loses its stick pretty easy so I found the tap on the edges did not stick well.

Superhero Baby Girl Shower

Since I posted about a superhero baby boy shower, it is only fair if I post the superhero baby girl show that I hosted at my house about a year and a half ago. 

Decorations made of plastic table clothes and cardboard box pieces covered in paper.At the time I did not have a colored printer so I hand colored all the little signs. (Colored printers are worth the investment!)

 Here is a close up of the diaper cake that I made for this occasion. Again, box of diapers, ribbon, craft foam and of course a pink cape!

Superhero Baby Welcoming Party Decor

My friend had a baby boy and this past Sunday we had a welcoming party for him. I was put in charge of the decorations and party favors. While I forgot to get a picture of it all set up at the party, I did get a picture of the display on the floor of my room!. 

The background is a chalkboard from Home Depot that I picked up to use as a backdrop for my photography. I used chalkboard paint markers to draw some sky scrapers.

The random 'pow' 'zap' 'boom' signs are all free clip art from the google search engine!

Here is a close up of the lollipop display. I just used foam from the flower section that I had left over from another project.  

 

Of course here is the diaper cake. Box of diapers, rubber bands, ribbon and craft foam that I cut out. Pretty east I did it in about an hour and a half. It is simple, but still looks AWESOME!

DIY Comic Book Table

I bought a new couch and wanted something unique to go with the living room. So I search around on Pinterest and saw a lot of comic book collage ideas covering furniture pieces. I loved the idea, but I did not like the clutter look of the collage. So here is my sophisticated take on a comic book table. 

So for all of you do it yourself lovers, this was super easy and super cheap! Plus, I get tones of compliments for it!

Supplies I used

• ·         2 Ikea Lack Tables*
• ·         Comic book pages
• ·         Modge Podge Gloss
• ·         Modge Podge Gloss Sealer
• ·         Paintbrush

*The reason I used Ikea Lack tables is not only are they cheap, but they are stackable which is great if you need space in the living room.

Instructions:

Step 1: Pick your comic book pages. I found I only needed 6 pages per table. I mixed comic book covers and inside pages from two different comic books. I kept with the DC theme to match the living room mural. Lay the pages on top of each table to make sure you like the layout/match up. Once you have the design you like take a picture to remember and then remove the pages from the table.

 

 Step 2: Start by taking a paintbrush and using it to put Modge Podge gloss on 1/3 of the table. I did each piece in thirds. I went right to left because I am left handed and I try to avoid Modge Podge everywhere. 

Step 3: Lay the first two pages down and then proceed to layer Modge Podge on top of the pages. Makes sure you smooth out each page. Air bubble will get caught up and bubbly! Try to get the page as flat and smooth to the wood as possible.

Step 4: Repeat step Two and Three for all the pages

Step 5. Once you have all your pages laid down, do one last layer over the whole table. The more Modge Podge the better!

Step 6: Let it dry. I let them dry over night because I started this project pretty late at night.

Step 7. Screw the legs on and tada! You have two side tables!

*I would recommend getting plexiglass to put over, just for protection purposes. I’m planning to pick some up myself.

 I picked up this nifty cart at IKEA a while back. It makes a perfect, movable, storage solution for crafty people! It's technically a kitchen cart. It comes in blue, black and white.

MARVEL UNIVERSE LIVE!!!!!!!!

Had to post a little side-bit about the Marvel Universe Live show! Not much of a Marvel fan (DC all the way), but there is no way I would turn down a free ticket. Thanks Nolan! It was an awesome experience and I got some great shots! Check out his review over at Pastrami Nation:

WONDERCON 2015

It's a bit late, but being the superhero lover that I am, I just had to share some pictures from my first Wondercon trip! It was an amazing experience and I cannot wait to go again next year. Defiantly dressing up next year. It makes it 10x more fun!

COMIC-THEMED WALL DECOR

 So, my best friend is a superhero geek just like me so I made her an original art piece to hang in her batcave!It was a pretty easy project, using leftover pieces from making my comic book end tables.

Supplies Used:

7-10 comic pages

1 16x20 canvas

3 smaller canvases (I found mine in a four pack at Hobby Lobby)

Wood letters

Black Paint

The secret ingredient that holds all this together is modge podge!

Instructions:

1. Paint All Canvases Black
2. Let it dry
3. Place comicbook pieces down on canvas
4. Modge podge away!
5. Let it dry
6. Use E600 clear glue to glue wood letters on canvas
7. Let it dry
8. Use E600 clear glue to glue smaller canvases to big canvas
9. Let it dry
